It is a secret. Where I am from, one can do much damage if they know your name. Everyone refers to me as Owner though, so I am fine with being called that.

There is safety in keeping secrets. You haven't gathered any other nicknames? What are you the owner of?

And no. People have called me different things over the years, but Owner is what is current.

Is it a special kind of inn?

It is special in the case that it is a place where all kinds of people come and go-- humans, demons, even animals. I also do not charge money.

[ there's a pause and he smiles. ]

It can be. I do not need money, or weapons, or anyone's bodies.

But secrets? I think that is worth more than any monetary value.

What do you do with all your secrets?

There are demons who use human bodies for a variety of things. Food, to wear them, use them as other resources... but that is not something that I need.

Oh. I simply take care of them. Rest assured, if someone gives me their secret, it will stay with me and me alone. I do not trade them off or anything.

You get many perks as my guests. My protection, for one. It is very often that people seek refuge at my inn because they need to escape something or someone.

Protection?

How long do they stay as your guests?

It depends on their needs. I recently had a guest who had stayed with me for years, although he has recently checked out of the inn. However, I will extend my protection to those after they have left the premises, if I am aware that they need assistance.

You make your inn sound almost too good to be true.

It is to me.

There will always be downsides. My personality is not always agreeable to others, and because those who usually end up at my inn are already easy targets for others, I end up in a lot of difficult situations with other demons, or humans with abilities. But we manage.

You can be odd and discomfiting in how you react to things, but I do not mind it.

Sometimes. It depends on the reason for their stay. Some run into the inn without meaning to, unaware of danger they are in. If they don't believe it's there, they are usually less grateful at the end of it.

One of my favorite guests is like that. He is a handful, and because of his unusual circumstances I end up seeing him a lot. He would prefer to live a normal life without any supernatural interference though, so he isn't usually happy about it, but it's impossible for him to live like that.

It sounds like your inn shows up for people who might need it whether they know it or not. I can understand him not wanting the life and circumstances he has, but why do you like him so much if he's ungrateful?

Because I think there are just some people who are meant to be in your life.

Aha, well. Just because they are doesn't mean they will remain in it.

Life is never that simple, unfortunately. So it is best to hold on while you can until you are no longer able.
