[It's such a complicated thing. He would never be ashamed of his love for Rosa, a devotion that constitutes so much of his will to live--it's that very love that allowed him to have a tad more patience for people like Nodd and Bradley than many others, up until their feelings put everyone else in danger and caused unnecessary suffering. (Luke is a hypocrite, after all.)
There is no world in which he wouldn't have chosen Rosa, even if he'd been coherent enough to actually make that decision. But that doesn't lessen his guilt now that he's calmer; it doesn't make it any easier to believe he did what he could, when he's so convinced--]
